We don’t need another storage facility

Riverton Tower Senior Center, Inc. and the Silverfield Group want to tear down the former Jones College at 1195 South Edgewood, the historical location of The Edgewood Theater, Murray Hill’s first movie theater, predating The Murray Hill Theater by 2 years, so they can build a  three-story storage facility.

Do we need one?
There are approximately 168 public storage facilities in Jacksonville already.
There are 12 located less than five miles from 1195 South Edgewood.
There are 10 less than 4 miles from 1195 South Edgewood.
There are 5 less than 3 miles from 1195 South Edgewood.
There are two less than 2 miles from 1195 South Edgewood.
There is 1 just 1.5 miles from 1195 South Edgewood.

Maybe all those places are full up?
Nope, we called them. Not all 168 in Jacksonville, just the 12 within walking distance of where developers want to build another one.

They get a little funny when you start asking them about their occupancy rate and a few refused to answer, those that did answer agreed to answer strictly off the record and with our  promise not to disclose them or their information.

The lowest occupancy rate disclosed was 67%. The highest occupancy rate disclosed was 81%. The average occupancy rate disclosed was 77%.

That figure was actually higher than we  had anticipated. When you search self storage and are immediately spammed with offers of first month, or second month free or $1 first month by multiple companies it’s more than evident  there are a lot of storage places with empty spaces, and even more evident we don’t need another one 1.5 miles away.
