A historic marker will be unveiled today on Amelia Island to honor the 2 million Africans who died and the 500,000 who survived being shipped as slaves in what was known as the Middle Passage. Amelia Island is one of 52 documented arrival locations of the Middle Passage, the Atlantic Ocean voyage of slaves to Europe, the Carribbean Islands and the Americas. The Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project will hold the dedication ceremony at Fort San Carlos in Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park, at 715 San Fernando St. The public is welcome to attend.
