Scum under the bridge

“Those street punks from the 904.”
I first heard SCUM play at Rain Dogs, back in 2019. The other bands, Forsaken Profit$, Some Kind Of Nightmare, The Wastedist, and Charlie Shuck I had experienced before. SCUM was new, new to me at least. That was January, and their performance was a late Christmas present, one that had arrived just on time. I found them to be a high energy blend of Punk, Rap, and Reggae, reminiscent of the earliest incarnation of Bad Brains.

I’ve been fortunate to see them a few times since. They’ve been known to put on pop up shows around town, especially in the 5 Points area. Lately they’ve been performing such shows under the Fuller Warren Bridge.
I was able to catch a performance this past Friday night. Under the bridge! What a perfect place for Punk! And not just Punk. SCUM is also Rap and Reggae, and there is a home for all three, under the bridge.
Their show was all ages, young and old, a family of sorts, under the bridge.

I have seldom seen such unbridled passion at any musical performance of any genre as I have at a Punk show. Such was the case this past Friday night, under the bridge.
With Punk, often it seems the dirtier or more deserted the location the better. I hold nothing against the more sanitized, mainstream stadium Punk bands, only that Punk is most at home in the places that no one else wants to be. Under the bridge.
