Jacksonville Naval Museum’s “U.S. Navy Cold War Experience”

“A Bold Ship for the Bold City!” The USS Orleck fired more rounds than any other ship during the Vietnam War to become the “Top Gun” during that time. Already previously operating as a museum ship in Louisiana, she will become the centerpiece of the Jacksonville Naval Museum’s “U.S. Navy Cold War Experience”.

The Orleck, a WWII built Gearing Class Destroyer, served throughout the Cold War period with the U.S. Navy & eventually on with the Turkish Navy. After Turkey decommissioned her, they returned her to the U.S. so she could become a museum ship.

Having served for so long, the Orleck became the most decorated post-WWII ship. She will Honor many Veterans of the Cold War time period and also represents the 14 Gearing Class destroyers that once called Mayport home. She will also inspire future generations of Patriots through STEM + History education.

The Downtown Investment Authority (DIA) voted unanimously to approve entering into an agreement with the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association (JHSNA) to berth the USS Orleck DD-886 at Pier 1 in the old Jacksonville Shipyards.
This will begin the Jacksonville Naval Museum. The Orleck is currently in Lake Charles, La and will have to be made seaworthy for the tow to Jacksonville. Donations are currently being accepted to assist in the cost for the tow and related expenses. You may donate here.
