“DUUUVAL” sculpture and bike racks

Jacksonville, take a look at the public art additions in downtown Jax! Today the “DUUUVAL” sculpture and bike racks was unveiled at 15 N. Ocean Street, (between Bay Street and Forsyth Street in the Elbow District) in downtown Jacksonville by the Cultural Council. Eleven separate bike racks merge together to spell DUUUVAL to all the cars entering downtown from the Main Street Bridge. No other perspective word-based bike racks sculpture exists in the USA or elsewhere.

The bike racks piece honors the origin of the term DUUUVAL, a rallying cry that came out of the 90’s hip hop scene. Each bike rack points to important black historical and cultural and institutions, in African American history.

Artists Samuel Maddox and Eric Moed are architects who graduated in June with a Masters from Harvard University’s Graduate School Design. Eric Moed’s work has been published in the NY Times, Huffington Post and BBC Radio. Caila Moed (formerly Gordon-Koster) is a Jacksonville native and former professional dancer. The sculpture has been fabricated and installed by David Main of Main Made Studios.
