1960 Time Capsule now at Jacksonville Public Library

The contents of the 1960 time capsule found in the cornerstone of the old city hall building on Bay Street have been digitized and stored in the Special Collections Department at the Main Jacksonville Public Library. View the items here.

The time capsule was discovered in the cornerstone of the former City Hall on Bay Street when the Public Works crew conducted pre-demolition work on the building. The time capsule had been placed there in October 1960 by the then-mayor Haydon Burns. On October 3, 2018  Mayor Lenny Curry had the pleasure of opening the time capsule. This collection includes images of the container and its contents.

If you wish to view the physical items from the capsule, you may call the Special Collections Department at (904) 630-2409 to schedule an appointment with a librarian.

Work is in progress to create a name index to make it easier to find specific people mentioned in the document. A public display case should be ready in 2019.
