The Roosevelt was one of several theaters in LaVilla, the historically African-American neighborhood adjacent to downtown Jacksonville. The other theaters were the Strand, the Frolic, Excelsior Hall, Little Savoy, The Colored Airdome, the Globe, and the Ritz.
Opened in 1949, the Roosevelt was located at 818 West Ashley Street. It formed the west side of the entertainment district that was known as the “Great Black Way”, the Roosevelt had one screen and a seating capacity of 1,150.
The Roosevelt was demolished before the redevelopment of LaVilla during the 1990s, the site is now part of the LaVilla School of the Arts campus.
