The “Old Stanton” High School is poised to get a new life thanks to an infusion of funding from the state. Rep. Wyman Duggan, R-Jacksonville, Rep. Tracie Davis, D-Jacksonville, and Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, sponsored the $2.5 million in state funding to renovate the historic building. The structure, which stands on the site of Jacksonville’s first elementary school for Black students, was built in 1917 and served as a high school until 1953, when it was repurposed as a technical school for 20 years. Plans call for it to become a museum and cultural center. (Action News Jax)
