Two months after the end of the Civil War, federal troops arrived in Texas to ensure that Black Americans living there were released from slavery. The anniversary of their arrival — June 19th, 1865 — was commemorated as Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday last year. We have several ways to celebrate Juneteenth tomorrow, including:
• The annual Melanin Market, which features two stages of live entertainment and displays from more than 250 Black-owned businesses and nonprofits. The free festival is scheduled from 3-9 p.m. along A. Philip Randolph Boulevard on Jacksonville’s Eastside.
• The Afrofuturism Experience digital art fest includes live performances, art, educational exhibits and free workshops. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at WJCT Studios, 100 Festival Park Ave. More info and tickets here.
• The Jacksonville Juneteenth event includes national and local gospel performers, dance bands and more, along with 50-plus vendors. 4-6:30 p.m., Daily’s Place. Get tickets here.
• The Memorial Park Juneteenth Fest offers games, trivia, bounce houses and food vendors. Noon-4 p.m.
