On this day in 1968, Snoopy walked into a surprise birthday party, so Peanuts officials give the beagle his birthday cake and candles to blow out every Aug. 10.
Some older fans believe his birthday is in October as Snoopy was introduced to the world on its third day running, Oct. 4, 1950. To add to the confusion he also received cake and birthday wishes on August 28, 1951 and other dates in other strips. But in 1968 it was decided, once and for all the official date for Snoopy’s birthday would be August 10.
Snoopy’s creator, Charles M. Schulz, started the wildly popular series while living in Minneapolis, later relocating to Sebastopol in 1958, then Santa Rosa in 1969.
Schulz passed away in Santa Rosa in 2000 but his beloved characters, Charlie Brown, the perennial underdog, and his dog, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts Gang live on.
Happy Birthday, Snoopy!
