From a teacher friend in the Duval County Public School system

My take away from the school meeting I just had:

1. Classes will not be be socially distanced because we don’t have room or enough teachers

2. Students will not be socially distanced on buses and no one will be on the bus to make sure they keep their masks on

3. Bus drivers will be taking student temperatures upon arrival to school and students will be kept in isolation the entire day if they have one – parents can still give their kid Tylenol or Advil before getting on the bus to evade the temperature check

4. All students will be sitting together in hallways before classes (2 to 3 ft apart, not 6 ft. Since we don’t have the space) and all students will be mixing again at dismissal

5. Teachers will not be provided with masks for students if they forget one, lose it, or get it dirty

6. Teachers will be provided with 1 container of disinfecting wipes. Maybe – we might not be getting any

7. Will we be getting hand sanitizer stations? Maybe – but probably not

8. During dismissal students will again be mixing together to go home

9. Can we open our windows to help with ventilation? No, because according to protocols put in place due to school shootings all windows and doors must remain closed and locked at all times

10. Students can take their masks off during recess. I’ll let you think about that one for a minute.

11. If a teacher is out sick and there’s no sub, their students will be split and put in other classrooms, overcrowding that room. Since all unnecessary furniture is being removed from rooms – this means they’ll be sitting on the floor, cramped and crowded

Dr. Greene’s reopening plan looks beautiful on paper but the reality is far from that and there is no funding. It does not matter what is on paper – what matters is what is actually happening in real time in the real situation.
