In 2013, volunteers with Cowford Archaeology test excavated an area in the La Villa portion of Jacksonville that revealed evidence of Ft. Hatch. The fort was one of nine built by the Union Army during the Civil War to protect gates and key areas of the wall constructed around the city. In February 2018, Cowford Archaeology, in conjunction with the Jacksonville Historical Society, dedicated a state historic marker at the site. The marker commemorates the fort and the brave men who were stationed there.
The ambitious goal of the Jacksonville Wall Project is to locate and document the remaining eight forts and place a similar historic marker at each site. This will leave an informative ring of markers around the original platted city of Jacksonville describing the forts and wall location. With your help, we can provide a lasting legacy so future generations will be aware of this little known, but important, fact of Jacksonville’s history.
