Protest props were removed from an affordable housing rally which brought dressers, mattresses and other furniture to the doorstep of Jacksonville City Hall yesterday. The items represented people who are evicted onto the streets. But the props didn’t last long – they were tossed out by city workers before the rally was over. Chief Administrative Officer Brian Hughes said the props were carted off because no one can block the entrances of public buildings, but state Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, took issue with Hughes, saying that he “disrupted a peaceful rally” and organizers had permission to be in front of City Hall.
With Jacksonville’s ongoing issues concerning garbage, recycling, and yard waste services Sunday’s pickup was the fastest the city, or her solid waste contractors, have picked up any refuse in years.
