Proposal to restore Moncrief Cemeteries

The Mayor’s Budget Review Committee has proposed a multiyear effort to restore the segregation era cemeteries in Moncrief.
The cemeteries; Pinehurst Cemetery, Memorial Cemetery, Sunset Cemetery, Old City Cemetery, Hillside Cemetery and Mt. Olive Cemetery were for African-Americans during the era of segregation.

The owners of the cemeteries abandoned them and the city took over maintenance but admittedly, has done a poor job and the cemeteries are in atrocious shape.

According to Sam Mousa, chief administrative officer “…we need a sustained plan to restore them once and for all. It’s something we as humanitarians need to do, in my opinion,”
Mousa told the budget review committee. “We need to get that right and that’s what these cemetery funds are for. This is a comprehensive program to fix it.”
