Local Bands Canary in the Coalmine and Grandpa’s Cough Medicine will both be appearing at this years Magnolia Fest. Magnolia Fest, October 18-21, 2012 at Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida.
Grandpa’s Cough Medicine is an outlaw bluegrass trio that ignores certain traditions of the genre, such as gospel themes and Blueridge mountain cabins, and instead focuses on frenetic picking, blazing tempos and dark subject matter. Bluegrass music is seldom played with such aggression and attitude, yet backed up by the musical competency and skill that embody the genre.
The simple combination of flat picked guitar, Scruggs-style banjo, thumping upright bass and tight vocal harmonies are combined into a proverbial bluegrass hand grenade that explodes with foot stomping intensity. The Florida Times-Union included the band’s CD “Jailbird Blues” among the top ten local albums of 2011.
Grandpa’s Cough Medicine will take the stage Friday from 5:15 pm until 6:30 pm in the Amphitheater and Saturday from 8:30 pm until 9:45 pm in the Music Hall.
Canary in the Coal Mine is an Americana/Indie Folk band fronted by songwriters Jessica Pounds and Sandy Wicker. A haunting quality underscores striking vocal harmonies and provides a focal point for the band’s Appalachian folk and alt country influences. It’s that uniquely characteristic sound of their voices together that first caught the girls’ attention in July of 2009, when they crossed paths busking in the streets of Asheville, North Carolina. They were immediately struck by an undeniable compatibility, and although they lived 500 miles apart the band was formed within four months.
Beyond vocals, Jessica and Sandy switch off between ukulele and guitar, and the Jacksonville, FL native band is completed by Chris Buck on banjo & drums, Peter Mosely on upright bass, Philip Pan on violin, and multi-instrumentalist Arvid Smith plays Dobro, Melobar, electric & 12 string guitars, and sitar.
Canary in the Coalmine opens up the Amphitheater Stage Thursday at 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm and Friday, in the Music Hall from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
