After more than a decade of discussion and planning, dredging of Big Fishweir and Little Fishweir creeks is poised to get started. Jax-based Underwater Mechanix Services was awarded the $8.2 million project contract and is expected to wrap up the work by next June. The purpose is to restore healthy aquatic habitats in the creeks, whose bottoms are covered with sediment due to urbanization and storms. The city will pick up 35% of the cost, with the federal government paying for the rest.
